See all files in Finder and searches (Mac)

From an awesome hint here [macworld].

Want to see all the files, but finder won't let you? Break out of the Nanny State of Mac OS X. Change the appropriate key in Finder's preferences

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES

Then kill the finder process to restart it. This will let you see . files (preferences etc)

This will still not show you system files. For that, in the finder window, underneath the search string, drop down the 'kind' box, select other, then add 'System'

A note on Python's __exit__() and errors

Python's context managers are a very neat way of handling code that needs a teardown once you are done. Python objects have do have a destructor method ( __del__ ) called right before the last instance of the object is about to be destroyed. You can do a teardown there. However there is a lot of fine print to the __del__ method. Store numpy arrays in sqlite
